Good Morning,

Today is Winter solstice

Sunrise 7am Sunset 4:45pm - length of day 9 hours 53 minutes.

Compare that to December 22 , Summer solstice

Sunrise 5:41 am and Sunset 8:06 pm - length of day 14 hours 24 minutes,

Today is also “show your stripes day” named after the graphics generated by Reading University to show temperature variations around the world from 1901 - 2020. Raw data goes in and a visual interpretation of temperature changes comes out.

We often say of people wearing our We Are Hughes shirts “show your stripes” this is not coincidence. Whilst the colours come from our landscape, the words “show your stripes” are a reference to science born out of the show your stripes graphic.

Our current member likes to use simplistic emotive language to skew evidence and play with data. To quote Shakespeare from 1599 “The fool doth think he is wise”.

400 years later in 1999 a study by David Dunning and Justin Kruger titled

"Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One's Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments" coined the term “The Dunning Kruger Effect”

We Are Hughes respect scientific process and do not pretend to know more than those who dedicate their lives to understanding and interpreting data.

Check out Show Your Stripes to generate stripe visuals from around the world.

A quick Wikipedia search on the Dunning Kruger Effect is fascinating. Apparently the first study was based around a failed robbery in which the perpetrator thought he would be invisible to cameras as he had lemon juice on his face.

Have a good day Hughes.

Show Your Stripes.
